My artwork is strongly influenced by frequent travels to the West Coast, exploring extensively the Sonoran Desert of California and Baja California Sur, Mexico. Camping out for long periods of time I was exposed to the arid cactus desert, experiencing a different dimension of TIME and SPACE. Every time, I was initially struck by the scarcity of color and life. This changed by the day when the desert revealed its intensive colors and vivid liveliness. Being exposed to the burning sun and the vast nightly universe; the emerging life and decay, I got a deep glimpse into our existence.
More recent impressions relate to the jungles of El Petén and Yucatán: abundant growth hiding the sky, Mayan Pyramids and life. A deep well of ancient traces became visible, nurturing my work back home in the studio.
The recent oil paintings shown here (“Xtampak-Series” and “Sun-Rain Series”) have been created during the recent pandemic isolation.
