Thomas Bühler
After Medical School at University of Zurich I worked in Switzerland as Expressive Therapist and Multimedia Artist. Some 35 years ago, I moved to New York City where I still live and work today, sharing time between the city and the East End of Long Island.
I studied art at ‘The Art Students League of New York’; ‘Instituto Allende’, San Miguel de Allende, Mexico; and – in my youth – with the painter Francis Bott, Paris.
My artwork is strongly influenced by my passion for nature and the Universe. I have strong imprints from extensive travels to the American West and Mexican desert and jungle. Camping out for long periods of time exposed to the arid Sonoran Desert I experienced a different dimension of TIME and SPACE. The scarcity of color revealing blooming and unexpected liveliness. Confronted with the daily burning sun and the vast nightly universe; emerging life and decay, I got a deep glimpse into our existence.
More recent impressions relate to the jungle of El Petén and Yucatán: abundant growth hiding the sky and traces of ancient Mayan Pyramids and forgotten lives. Most of my gouaches and oil pastels (‘OXKINTOK Series’) were created outdoors in this shady environment. It opened a deep well, that nurtures my work back home in the studio.
In my Oil paintings I use strong vivid colors – often mixed with sand – contrasting hues with bodily textures. Some of the big canvases contain clear geometrical forms reaching out into the Unknown. Others show primordial figures with cut-out fragments, creating a new dimension and an inner–outer order, yin-yang.
My recent work evolved during the recent “pandemic isolation”.
